Meeting of L? UNO on the Objectives of the Millenium for the Development in New York City.
With L? approaches the crucial meeting which is held this week in New York to evaluate where is the world fight against poverty throughout the world, Oxfam launches a call to the world leaders for qu? they redouble D? efforts in the fight against L? of the foodstuffs and the fuel, and consecutive economic deceleration raising of prices with L? erosion of advanced which had been made in the fight against poverty.

The last estimates in date suggest that the number D? did individuals badly nourished throughout the world pass from 75 to 925 million, making move back the progress achieved to achieve the Goals of the Millenium for the Development which consist in dividing by two the hunger in the world D? here 2015.

L? does raising of prices of the foodstuffs also indirectly affect the progress achieved in L? reached other Objectives of the Millenium for the Development, primarily because the hunger exerts a negative influence on the capacity of the individuals to be worked, to remain in good health and, for the children, with going with L? school.

Alison Woodhead, spokesman D? Oxfam International in New York, known as: “To take up these new challenges and herculéens, the political will and ambitions will have to operate a radical turning. This meeting aims to propose concrete initiatives to enable us to keep these objectives anti-poverty in line of sight. ”

Approximately 90 leaders D? States and of governments, as well as the chairmen of the largest world companies and the hundreds D? will organization fighting against poverty gather in New York this September 25 within the framework of L? high level event that are the Objectives of the Millenium for the Development which will be accomodated by the Secretary general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon. Does Oxfam call some with them so that this top is a top D? urgency and for qu? they S? invest still more in the fight against poverty.

Alison Woodhead: “The leaders cannot be satisfied any more to reiterate vain promises by crossing the fingers. It S? D acts? an urgency vis-a-vis the poverty which requires the same attention and the same reactivity as the financial crisis which currently does the one of the newspapers. Important progress was achieved, but it remains still much to make. ”

It is possible D? to achieve notable progress, even in the poorest countries. In Rwanda, the number D? children who die of the malaria was tiny room to the two-thirds in L? space only these two last years. A boy who is born in Tanzania aujourd? today short 25% of risk in less to die before its first birthday that its S? ur only born four years before.

Within sight of does the current tendency, Oxfam alert L? opinion on the fact that the Objectives of the Millenium for the Development could not be achieved. would 150 billion dollars additional be necessary D? here 2010 to achieve all the objectives, C? is a little less double of the sum spent (85 billion dollars) to reinflate only one company D? insurance like pin.

Woodhead concludes: “Being given the storm in which the financial markets are currently, the rich countries will be tempted to tighten the belt. But it is necessary for us to make of it more, and not less, if we want to counter the true danger which threatens D? destruction progress achieved to achieve the Goals of the Millenium for the Development. Since this top was announced in January, the rise in the prices of the foodstuffs and oil drove back additional million people to poverty. ”

This week, Oxfam and D? other international agencies launch a new size campaign, entitled “In My Name” (On my Behalf), which requires of the citizens to put their leaders vis-a-vis their made promises in 2000. Does this initiative gather many dignitaries, such as for example sovereign Rania of Jordan, Mary Robinson and L? archbishop Desmond Tutu, as well as celebrities of all the continents, in particular Rahul Bump, will.i.am, Kidjo Angelica, Wyclef Jean, Annie Lennox and Sergio Mendes.

Regards.
